How to Build a Big Set. 3d Animation. (Part 2 – Model and Location Scouting)
I explain how I reduce costs in 3d model buying and how I can construct a realistic looking scene via online location scouting.
I believe that you have to plan well ahead in 3d model acquisition, with a good outline knowledge of your script – in order to keep costs down, so during the buying phase of this project I was constantly scouring both free 3d model sites and paid for sites to find the best value and most appropriate models.
In fact this process took 2 years. (And it all adds up, the software is a very significant part of the spend as well).
In some cases I wasted my money as now I realise I won’t use that model, and in other cases better models came along, so I lost out there as well.
However overall I probably saved about 30 percent off the full price. Indeed many items were bought at 70, 80 or even 90 percent off. Not to mention the freebies.
Also having an intimate knowledge of the location you plan to set your film in will help you construct a realistic scene. I like to use Google maps and google street view to accomplish this.
